In 1996, University of Richmond
students Scott Barghaan and Jason Sartori created the Richmond Rowdies
as part of a RCSGA “project.” In the early stages it was an uphill
battle with administration on why such a spirit organization should be
created and funded. The Rowdies worked with the Athletic
department to pick their first sponsor (which at the time was Coca-Cola,
over Nike), and then set a plan with the Athletic Director and the men's
basketball coaching staff to work out how the organization would be
stitched into the “standard operating procedures” for basketball games
(with the hopes of football one day).
In
the national realm of collegiate athletics, it is widely recognized that
maintaining a dedicated and enthusiastic group of student fans is
beneficial to the Athletic Program of the University. In addition, it is
widely documented that the overall success of a University's Athletic
Program is advantageous for the students, faculty, and surrounding
community. Having a comprehensive knowledge of these facts, the students
find it necessary to establish a group dedicated to serving the school
in a manner of spirit. We, the Richmond Faithful, knowing full well the
multiple benefits of an enthusiastic and motivated student cheering
section do hereby establish a union dedicated to these objectives.
The Richmond Rowdies
is a spirit group open to all University of Richmond students. The
primary function of the members will be to promote school spirit, unity,
and awareness of athletic activities through participation in supporting
University of Richmond athletic teams.
The Richmond Rowdies
understand and are committed to fulfilling the responsibilities of
abiding by University of Richmond policies.
